Minor variations in scale make my OCD itch....

The other day I was reading over a Pathfinder adventure that I'm thinking of running as a one-off at some point, The Skinsaw Murders.

A couple of years ago I had started a Pathfinder campaign and I had planted some seeds in it to use some published adventures one of which was the Skinsaw Murders.  Skinsaw Murders was one of the first adventures published for Pathfinder and it holds up really well.  It's basically a murder mystery with some creepy supernatural elements that has a really cool vibe and steps outside of the usual dungeon crawls that tend to be my bread and butter.

As a miniature gamer any time I read a gaming supplement or module and think I might want to play it I immediately check out my miniature collection to figure out what I have and what I need to paint.  One of the things I need if I'm going to game this adventure is a few ghouls which is no issue because I have over a hundred of them for Warhammer....but gee they seem kind of small....that's okay I'll make do...but they do seem small.......okay I'll paint some newer bigger ghouls.

I wanted some 30mm ghouls that would fit in with my other Pathfinder miniatures but I didn't find any that really jumped out at me.  However I did have some Damned Of Sloth models for Helldorado that actually looked like they would make terrific ghouls and felt like they fit fairly well with the aesthetic of the other models in my collection.

I probably won't be running this game any time soon but it's still nice to get some models done early for a game that will happen in the future.

Devil's Night Devil

I mentioned this morning that I decided to add something to my painting mix for the week.

I've had this figure kicking around for 4-5 years and truth be told I have no plans to use it for any game anytime soon but it suddenly hit me today that I'm not using Halloween the way I usually do to motivate me to do a project so I figured I'd shoehorn this (and tomorrow's fig as well) in to make me feel like I participated hobby-wise in the holiday.

So it might be obvious but for 'Devil's Night' I've painted the devil-looking-demon from the Helldorado Demons starter box.  I got a bunch of Helldorado miniatures when they first came out and I think most of them are fantastic but the ones that really drew me in were the various "damned" figures in the demon line.  Not being familiar with the game rules at the time I bought the figures I also bought the starter box for my chosen faction but because none of the figs in that box really excited me I never painted any of them until today.

This devilish looking fellow seems like he would serve as a great stand in for a lot of different games but somehow I can't escape the weird feeling that I've painted a figure so I can wargame Tenacious D videos......

Project Scrapheap: Bloat Thrall

I've got some progress to report ALOT earlier than I expected.  After prepping my Machine Thrall for painting I starting looking through my backlog and unused models looking for more potential proxies for my new army.  I started off by going through all the stuff I had that used the same style bases thinking they were also likely to be closer to 30mm (or "heroic" 28mm) than other figs.  Surprisingly even though I have alot of Undead and Steampowered robots for Malifaux none of those quite worked, my Dark Age stuff was all too organic and not undead enough, I found of few potential Ex Illis pieces but the real treasure came when I dugout my Helldorado stuff.

Helldorado is a skirmish game that came out a few years back.  I bought into it with a friend but then he moved away and for a time the product was very difficult to get so none of my other gaming friends got into it.  So my Helldorado figures languished half painted in a box for about 4 years....until this morning.

In my opinion if you're going to proxy models your opponent should still be able to look at them on the tabletop and instantly figure out what they are.  So as great as it is to find things that somewhat convey what they are I find I generally want something that either looks spot on or couldn't possibly be anything else.  The great thing about this figure is that the reason I never painted a Bloat Thrall during my earlier time pianting Warmachine figures is that the Bloat Thrall miniature never appealed to me so finding a suitable proxy is a double win.  What also worked out in my favour is that I had half-painted the model before I put it away so when I found it it took me less than an hour to finish and base it!  So not only is my first model done but it's 2 more points that I hadn't figured into my list yesterday!

The model itself is the Damned Of Gluttony which comes as a 2-pack.  The first model is much smaller, being slightly larger than man-sized and then once it has consumed some opponents it grows to the model seen above.

It's great to catch a break on a project like this, now I jut need to get my paint brush back in hand and keep digging through the treasue trove.
